Becker Scholarships – For some accounting students, the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam is the next step after graduation. For one student at Oklahoma Christian University, the Newton D. Becker Scholarship is helping him get closer to that goal.
In November 2017, Sisay Gillock, a senior accounting major from Portland, OR, applied for the Full Becker Bundle course scholarship—a total of $3,487. She said she knew the opportunity was competitive because the institution only accepts 40 full-time students. Becker contacted Gillock on Dec. 15 to let her know the organization had selected her as a full scholarship recipient.

“I applied as soon as I could,” Gillock said. “I just wrote an essay and then applied. I wasn’t sure if I was going to get it or not because they only pick 40 [people] in the U.S. So I said, ‘Well, probably not,’ but I’m going to do it.”

Becker Professional Education, a service that individuals use to prepare for certification exams and further study, offers a variety of scholarships for programs such as the CPA Exam Review.
“With a focus on providing the latest tested content and software functionality that mirrors the exam in every way, Becker’s CPA Review courses help empower students,” says our team of CPA certification earners.
Gillock said the test review program will help him prepare for the CPA exam after graduating in April. He said most review courses can cost between $3,000 and $5,000, depending on the content of the course package. He said he knew the scholarship was the only way he could afford the test prep package.
“I wanted to take a course with [Becker], but I thought, ‘There’s no way I’m going to make it,'” Gillock said. “So I started looking into whether they had any scholarships. When they got to OC, I asked if they had any, and [the agent] told me to go online and check. I looked online and found it on their website. I had no expectations of getting it so I was surprised.”

According to Becker’s website, the exam package includes a variety of components to help candidates prepare for the exam. The package is very rich and detailed in terms of the products it offers.
“Our premium review package includes lectures, textbooks, simulations, practice questions, mock exams, flashcards, a final review module, and more,” the website also states. “It’s comprehensive, relevant, and effective, giving you more motivation to succeed when taking the test.”
Although Gillock used an Oklahoma Christian professor as a reference for the scholarship, he said he did the research and applied for the scholarship review himself. He said it was difficult to pass the CPA exam without taking a prep course because the exam is so comprehensive, but he was excited to see how well Becker’s review program helped him succeed.
“I think it will really help me and I feel like I can get through it now with the help of their courses and learning throughout the semester and then into next year,” Gillock said.

Business Professor Jody Jones said Gillock’s hard work can be seen in his work as a student, a cross-country runner, an internship at Baker Corporation and in his personal life. Jones said studying for the CPA exam will serve Gillock well as he prepares to take the exam after graduation.
“These tests are extremely difficult and cover a lot of information,” Jones said. “This class will help you prepare not only for the exam topics but also for the format and structure of the questions.”
Because the scholarship takes the financial burden off of test preparation, Jones said Gillock can focus on test preparation rather than costs. Jones said he hopes to see Gillock succeed in his endeavors after graduating from Oklahoma Christian.
“I hope Sisay finds a place where he can use his God-given talents,” Jones said. “I especially hope he finds a place where he can balance his career and family.” The Granite City Organization of Active Retired Steelworkers (SOAR), Chapter III will award our annual scholarship to a 2022 area high school graduate associated with an active SOAR member. Last year’s $2,000 Jane Becker Scholarship photo was presented to five 2021 winners outside the Granite City, Ill. Cinema. With COVID protocols in place, the regular awards ceremony was moved to the theater. Getting to know Nick Becker gave David Aylor a new perspective on the magnitude of the sacrifices our troops make. Now, the Law Office of David Aylor is looking to assist active-duty military members who want to begin or continue their legal education. To be considered for this scholarship, you must first write about your military experience and tell us why your service to our country will benefit your legal career. If you feel your military experience and education qualify you for law school, or if you have been accepted to an accredited law school, we encourage you to use the form at the bottom of this page to submit your essay.
The Nick Becker Scholarship is named after veteran Nick Becker, who played a pivotal role in building the David Aylor Law Firm into the thriving organization it is today. Nick was an exceptional law officer who left a lasting impression on all who worked with him.

Many veterans suffer from PTSD after entering civilian life, and Nick was no exception. On March 31, 2017, Benjamin Nickolas “Nick” Becker, 36, a United States Army veteran, Sand Sharks Veterans club member, USCB student, and beloved law officer, made the heartbreaking decision to take his own life. Our desire is to honor his memory by helping any military member or veteran who hopes to improve their future by attending law school.
The Nick Becker Scholarship is open to any active duty military member or veteran pursuing a legal education. It was not an easy road for Nick Becker to transition from military life to law school. His journey inspired the Law Office of David Aylor to help active duty military members or veterans enhance their legal education by easing their financial burden.
Each year, the Law Office of David Aylor will award $1,000 to an outstanding veteran or active military member to further their legal education at an accredited law school, in memory of Nick. Submit your nomination and application below.
