The Green Certificate Program offers students the opportunity to participate in a variety of structured learning pathways related to agriculture as part of their high school curriculum and earn up to 16 credits and a certificate leading to a career in agriculture.

   Senior Awards Night was held at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium on May 27. Many seniors were presented with scholarships, certificates and trophies to celebrate their hard work in High School and in the community. There were also several other highlights that reminded the audience that OHS is still home to the Panthers, even years after they graduated.

    To start the evening, Principal Jason Johnson spoke a few words after the seniors were seated. There was a musical performance by the senior madrigals in attendance that evening. Jordan Toney, a graduating senior, led a group of five students in singing “Home” by Dierks Bentley.

    After the performance, community leaders announced which seniors received scholarships. Some of the seniors who received awards were Joe Piscitelli from the Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce, Nycol Lyons and Knisha Fearrington from Alpha Kappa Alpha, Adam Gates from the Lorie James Freeland Scholarship and Lindsay Marie Keeter from the State Staff Auxiliary Scholarship.

    One part of the night that was very special for the graduating seniors at OHS was when Kacie Chamberlain’s parents presented her with a scholarship. Angie Hurdle, Chamberlain’s mother, presented the award and reminded seniors to stay safe wherever they go. The scholarship was recently opened to all athletes. The recipients were Nicholas Gentile, Keegan Crabtree, Adam Gates, Collin Pope, Kaneisha Pettiford and Mackenzie Cates.

    Other groups that received awards were all members of the Beta Club, Link Crew, and Student Government Association.

Pink and Camouflage Day was the spiritual attire chosen for AG Day on Friday, October 4th. The theme was in memory of Kacie Chamberlain and Chase Underhill who passed away last school year. Both were members of the AG class. The winner of the girls pink and camo day was Mckenzie Almers, a senior, and the winner of the boys was Jesse Foushee, a sophomore. The awards were given to the students on Tuesday, October 8th during second period.

Athletic Boosters is one of the clubs selling novelty items. They will be selling popcorn, chips, and drinks. The Peace Club will have wristbands, tie-dye shirts, and bags. The Virtual Business Club will have ping pong games. The SGA will be selling frozen ice cream. Other clubs will have booths for face painting and games.

The women’s basketball team will be selling donuts and bottled water. Laurie Shoffner will be selling baked goods with the Women of Style and Difference Club. The Forward Club will be selling mini pumpkins and ghost and monster paraphernalia.

Students will honor Kacie Chamberlain and Chase Underhill by wearing pink and camouflage. There will also be a booth where students and teachers can purchase raffle tickets, koozies, drinks and baked goods to raise money for the Kacie Chamberlain and Chase Underhill Scholarship Fund.

Kacie Leann Chamberlain, a 16-year-old OHS student, died in a car crash Saturday. She was an active student at Orange and had participated in many extracurricular activities. Kacie’s friends described her as kind, friendly, caring, cheerful, free-spirited and outgoing.

She majored in American history, chemistry, agriculture and Spanish. Chamberlain was a member of the OHS softball team. She also placed fourteenth on the Thunder, a fastpitch community softball team not affiliated with OHS. Her positions on the team were pitcher and outfielder. She was a member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) club and New Horizon, a Christian church.

Chamberlain was on the OHS Homecoming Court every year during her high school years. She was elected to the court her freshman, sophomore and senior years in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Many students knew and loved these two students, and even those who didn’t know them felt very sorry for their family and friends and wanted to show their respect. Principal Jason Johnson said of Underhill, “The school is hurting and hurting a lot right now, and we’re trying to get through this together. The swim team will remember Underhill forever and we have so many people here who are ready to support and help the students here.” “Anyone who plays softball is devastated by the loss of a sweet young lady who was so loved by so many people,” he said of Chamberlain.
