If you do not meet the SAP requirements; the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services will notify you. Once you are notified by the Office of Financial Aid, you will be given the opportunity to appeal.

You must complete the SAP appeal form and submit it to the Financial Aid Office. Then, meet with your academic advisor to create an educational plan to get you back on track and meet SAP requirements. You must also submit a statement showing how you have addressed the issues you have experienced in the past and taken positive steps to make changes.

If your appeal is approved by Financial Aid and Scholarship Services; you will be on probation and eligible for financial aid. If you make sufficient progress during the probationary period to meet SAP requirements. You will be eligible for financial aid. Failure to meet SAP requirements may result in loss of eligibility.

Your best bet to maintain your aid is to stay on top of the eligibility requirements and not have to go through this process. You can view your SAP status under the Finance tab in My ASU.

Community college transfer students face a variety of challenges as they begin taking courses in a larger, more complex university environment. Navigating a new campus; succeeding in large classes and obtaining graduate research opportunities can be difficult.

But Arizona State University has launched a new scholarship program specifically aimed at helping students participate in undergraduate research that improves their chances of being accepted to medical and graduate school.

“We found that undergraduates are not as engaged in graduate research as students who started their college experience at ASU,” said Sarah Brownell, assistant professor in ASU’s School of Life Sciences and principal investigator of the new grant program. “Undergraduate research is an issue because it provides a unique opportunity for students to learn how to do research. We know that engaging in research as undergraduates helps students secure their future after graduation.”

The National Science Foundation is providing $1 million to establish a new scholarship program at ASU called the LEAP Scholars Program, which will provide $600,000 in scholarships to transfer science students over the next five years.

As LEAP Scholars, students learn about research; Conduct research in a faculty member’s research laboratory and present their research findings to the community. ASU’s School of Life Sciences; School of Molecular Sciences; Transfer students from community colleges who wish to pursue a degree offered by the School of Earth and Space Exploration or the Department of Physics are eligible for this program.

The purpose of this scholarship is to increase the number of transfer students conducting research by helping them meet their business needs while studying.

“Transfer students often work at the same time as they are in school, so they often don’t have time to do research. “This scholarship program is designed to reduce the need for students to work outside of school and allow them to focus on research,” said Brownell, director of the LEAP Scholarship Program.

Leap Scholars program manager Caitlin Cooper said there is a real need for scholarships for transfer students.

“Until this program, we didn’t have a scholarship program that specifically focused on transfer students interested in research, yet over 40 percent of transfer students graduate from the School of Life Sciences. This fills a huge need,” Cooper said.
